When you find yourself in the position of hiring new employees for your company, there are many things that should be taking into consideration before you make the final decision about who to hire.
A background check is something that should be performed on all potential candidates for the job. It may not be the most cost efficient way to do things, but it has saved many companies a lot of grief later on down the road. This gives the employer a snapshot of what this person is like. If a person has a long list of criminal violations, you may want to reconsider employing this type of person. If the person has one or two infractions from years and years ago, you may want to bring this up in the interview process to see what they have to say for themselves.
Along with a background check, past employment and school dates should also be checked. This is important because so much fraud is taking place recently, and you don’t want to find out months later that what the employee told you is false information. Verify that all the information on the resume is in fact true.
Next, credentials should be verified. You do this for the same reasons you check their school dates and employment history. Some people will inflate their worth with false credentials to see how much it can benefit them. You don’t want them to think you don’t trust them, but this is more of a safety net for you as an employer for this potential candidate.
Everyone should check the driving record of a potential candidate. A driving record can tell you a lot about a person. If the person will be driving a company vehicle or van, their driving record can be especially important. You wouldn’t want to hire someone who had gotten their license taken away for DUI or any type of illegal activity. You would never know about this if you didn’t pull their driving record. It’s always better to err on the side of caution.
It’s always the best decision to hire all potential candidates. The last thing you want is a potential slacker, a person who is late all the time or someone who calls in sick every other week. By screening potential candidates, you will more than likely hire the cream of the crop.
